in common business scenarios
Running a Monte Carlo simulation in Microsoft Office Excel 2007
Jordan Michaels, a GMC auto dealer, believes that demand for new Envoys will be normally distributed with a
mean of 200 and standard deviation of 30. His cost of receiving an Envoy is $25,000, and he sells an Envoy for
$40,000. He can sell half of all the leftover Envoys for $30,000. He is trying to decide how many Envoys to order,
so he builds a spreadsheet with models of orders of 200, 220, 240, 260, 280, and 300 Envoys. Jordan is able to
calculate the number of Envoys he should order for his dealership by using a Monte Carlo simulation that runs on
Microsoft Office Excel 2007.
To take advantage of publicly available data, we started with a Monte Carlo spreadsheet from Microsoft's Web
site. (Adapted from Winston, W.L. (2004): Microsoft® Excel®: Data Analysis and Business Modeling. Washington:
Microsoft Press, p. 462.) To make this initial spreadsheet more like one a real business might use, we added
additional worksheets for each quantity of vehicles--200, 220, 240, 260, 280, and 300--that the dealer is
considering purchasing.
We timed:
the Microsoft Excel 2007 calculation from when Jordan presses F9 in Excel to start the recalculation
until the Data Table indicator on the Status Bar goes away
Dual-monitor Windows Vista Aero scenario: Viewing a slideshow while an HD video
plays
Andy Granton is a program manager at the Melcore Robotics Company. He has two monitors attached to his PC
so he can multitask more efficiently. Andy has the job of developing a video to showcase his company’s actuator
arms. He’s considering Web based HD video that looks very high-tech, so he visits Microsoft’s Web site and
checks out an HD video promo for HD WMV. He watches the windowed video on one monitor, while on the other
he has open some photos for a candidate location for a video shoot. While the Microsoft demo video plays, he
uses Windows Photo Gallery to open the folder of JPEG pictures into list view and then clicks slideshow to get a
rotating show of the images.
We analyze the quality of the slideshow transitions, which use a fade effect between photographs, and note
whether those transitions are smooth or choppy. We also check the quality of the HD video playback on each
system.
For more details on how we executed and measured these scenarios, our specific test functions, and the files the
scenarios use, see Appendix B.
